Referrals are the biggest cheat code to white collar job applications. It comes as no surprise that having someone on the inside of a company who is vouching for you, greatly double/triples ones ability to make it past the first dreaded filter of HR. However, the main issue people run into is two things:

  1. Not having anyone in their immediate network at that specific company

  2. Not being able to tactfully ask for a referral during the “coffee chat/informational” conversation

We’ll be addressing both these issues in this post today.

When reaching out to people on LinkedIn you want to try and reach out to people who have something in common with you (this could be high school, college, company or even type of role). This helps increase the odds of them replying to your first message.
